Statement for Promoting the Implementation of the UN Conventio on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On 8 and 9 December 2008, in“Proud to be Myself, Citizen Rights of Persons with Disabilities International Conference held in Taiwan, all participating organizations, in matching the spirit of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), adopt the following statement:

1. We promote, respect and support any affirmative action towards the fundamental freedom, human rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

2. We urge organizations of and for persons with disabilities to work together to strengthen international cooperation and to enable persons with disabilities around the world to participate in international affairs concerning the monitoring and implementation of the Convention.

3. We will promote and co-monitor the implementation of the CRPD and its optional protocol in every participating country.

4. We will support and contribute to existing information exchange network to:  Develop the rights of persons with disabilities through sharing of information and experience;  Promote the exchange of information and all related matters in the disability community; and acilitate the self advocacy movement of persons with disabilities in every participating country

5. We will, through networking activities, facilitate and promote cross national coordination and advocacy for the rights of and services for persons with disabilities in every participating country.

6. We will support and contribute to existing international networks to promote cross disability implementation of the CRPD.
